Photovoltaic technology is some of the most exciting green, renewable technology available. As energy prices increase, more and more families and businesses have recognized the need for a more sustainable energy source. In response to this growing recognition, Solar energy demand has grown by 20-25% per year for the last 20 years, and this rate has been accelerating! This decline is the result of several factors: a) increasing efficiency of solar cells, b) improvements in manufacturing technology, and c) economies of scale. Typical turn-key grid-tie installations currently cost approximately $7-9 per watt DC, before rebates, incentives and credits which will cut the installed costs significantly - up to 80%! Residential PV systems typically are 2000W - 5000W in DC power production; the Florida rebates guide these systems (go to www.DSIRE.org for more information). Commercial photovoltaic systems range anywhere from 2000W to utility-scale megawatt Solar farms. Again, the State currently rebates $4/watt DC and the Federal government allows a 30% tax credit for eligible solar systems plus an accelerated depreciation schedule. For these reasons, solar has become affordable for many residential customers and a very good financial decision for most businesses.

We have experience with 2100W residential PV through 25kW commercial systems.

Here is a good formula for determining the output of your solar array:

DC watts x 85% overall efficiency factor (inverter, wire losses, deviations from STC, etc.) = AC output.
AC output x insolation (for Melbourne expect 5.31 hours per day average) = kWh generated per day.

For example, a 5250W DC PV system will produce the below expected power:
5250W x 5.31 hrs / 1000 = 27.88 kWh DC per day
27.88 kWh DC x 85% = 23.70 kWh AC per day
X 365 days per year = 8655 kWh AC per year
/ 12 = 721 kWh AC per month.
